General Information

MetaSynth is an electronic music composition and sound design program unlike any tool you have ever used. With its infinitely customizable tunings and award-winning Image Synthesis technology, MetaSynth can create an astonishiing variety of sound and music. Whether you are creating cutting-edge elecronica or neo-classical masterpieces, MetaSynth will expand your sonic palette in ways you never imagined

Presets & Filters - The CD contains a hundred of presets and filters libraries that both provide examples of MetaSynth sound pictures AND can be used as starting points when creating your own sounds.

Instrument Library - Contains a LARGE library (over 200 megabytes) of MetaSynth high-quality multi-sample instruments and preset libraries which use them. The CD features a full set of accoustic instruments with high quality home-made violin and cello, a serie of killer ambiant pads, a stereo techno drum set, the best stereo strings orchestra you will ever find and much more...

Waves & Procedural Synth - Contains some useful data files for use with the Wave Table Palette, Procedural Synth and the Envelope Editors.

Custom Scales library - Contains thousands of custom scales for use in MetaSynth. These scales cover everything from traditional scales and tunings used around the world to experimental mathematically derived scales.

Spectrums - Contains spectrum files that can be used to create input sources for the ImageSynth.

Input Samples - Contains sound files that are useful as ImageSynth input sources with its presets library.

Documentation and tutorials - A soft copy of the color version of the MetaSynth User Guide plus seven tutorials that will help you get the most out of MetaSynth.

The Manual - If you are like us, you rarely read software manuals. We recommend that you make an exception with this one. There is much that MetaSynth can do that you won't discover without a few glimpses at this manual.

MetaSynth is the first synthesis and sound design software that gives you all the power of advanced computer graphics to explore infinite sonic possibilities. It combines sampling, wavetable, additive, subtractive, granular and frequency modulation techniques with the most intuitive means for visualizing audio information ever created.
MetaSynth literally lets you paint with sound. What happens when any image from any source, can be transformed into sound ? MetaSynth, created by legendary programmer and artist Eric Wenger (the inventor of KPT Bryce) makes this discovery possible. MetaSynth works with audio like a graphic program. Even non-musicians can instantly interpret and use MetaSynth's picture window...Create a vivid tone picture, splashing broad strokes of sound across the screen. Or carefully draw in notes, harmonics and undertones, entire scores, controlling every sonic nuance. Or simply use any picture as a starting point for a new sound or composition, then freely shape and alter it.

MetaSynth maps picture coordinates into time and frequency domains. A pixel's gray scale controls the volume of a specific harmonic at a specific moment in time. Stereo position is determined by pixel color.

Audio professionals will love MetaSynth's toolset: The powerful real-time wavetable and FM windows, elegant envelope generators and the sheer processing flexibility. Use any synthesized waveform or real-world sampled sounds, even combine the two. Plus graphic harmonic filtering, vocoding and a broad palette of effects. For sample manipulation and sound design, there's nothing else like MetaSynth.

And you don't need to be a sound engineer to use MetaSynth, you just need to be able to use a mouse. No experience is necessary and no extra hardware or software is required.

MetaSynth makes it possible for anyone to discover their own new universe of sound.

B) How MetaSynth Plays A Picture

vertical axis represents pitch

horizontal axis represents duration

brightness intensity represents volume (Black being silent)

color represents stereo placement (Red is left, yellow is center, and green is right)

MetaTip: Red + Green = Yellow (at Maximum)

MetaSynth is an environment in which you can use familiar graphics tools as powerful implements of sonic sculpture, and it provides a truly "intuitive" way of looking at sound. Textures, patterns and gradients apply to audio in ways you may have never imagined. Here is a tool which can genuinely expand your creative horizons, and help you push the sonic envelope.

And MetaSynth is a blast to work with. Its innovative displays, coupled with flexible synthesis, sample editing and signal processing tools, encourages creativity and opens the ears and eyes.

C) So what will a picture sound like ?

It could range from the purest sine wave tones to complex and heavily processed multi-samples. Sweet or dissonant, familiar or outlandish...it's all within your control. There are a number of sound technologies integrated within MetaSynth, such as wavetable synthesis, frequency modulation, granular synthesis, sampling and a big selection of real-time effects. Non-real-time processes include morphing and convolution of sounds. Many of these tools are rarely found in conventional music software. MetaSynth lets you freely combine all these techniques within a single program.

MetaSynth's image=sound paradigm revolutionizes composing as well as sound design. Before long you"ll treat images as entire movements or scores. With larger RAM partitions you can work on pieces of five minutes or longer.

D) No hardware required!

MetaSynth is a stand-alone application that comes complete with a variety of built-in synthesis and sample playback engines. On faster computers MetaSynth can preview more than 400 oscillators in real time. MetaSynth employs unlimited oscillators when Synthesizing, or processing, your sound to RAM. How's that for polyphony! Load in your own Sound Designer II or AIFF samples, use the on-board Wave Table and Procedural Synthesizers, apply real-time Effects, custom harmonic filters and exotic processing algorithms, then save your creations as mono or stereo SDII files.

MetaTip: The Preview Sound function can be very CPU intensive, performance will vary depending on the speed of your machine. Larger images (more oscillators) may overload the CPU during playback. If this happens, you'll hear the audio playback start to cut in and out. At this point it's best to Synthesize the current Pict in order to hear the sound playback properly.

MetaSynth is designed so that you can jump right in and have a blast working with sound and image. Experimentation is encouraged. Paint any image to modulate MetaSynth's source sounds. Import your own sound files to hear how they"re "played" by pictures in the Image Synth. Explore harmonics, scales and time dimensions, wield powerful signal processing and image tools. Go to that candy store and don"t ever come out.
